What makes the Selkirk Mountains so attractive to skiers?

The Selkirk Mountains attract skiers primarily for their legendary deep and dry powder snow, which falls consistently due to a unique weather system. The mountains offer diverse terrain, from steep, glaciated bowls and alpine runs to gladed forests and long, fall-line slopes, catering to various skill levels and adventure types. Skier interest is also driven by the region’s limited crowds and remote feel, creating a more exclusive experience for those seeking deep snow and solitude.

Snow & conditions

  • Consistent, high-volume snowfall: Moisture-laden Pacific storms rise over the mountains, dropping an average of 34–40 feet or more of snow annually.
  • High-quality “dry” powder: The interior location and combination of coastal moisture and interior cold create a blend of snow that is not too heavy or too light, making it ideal for skiing and for staying soft for weeks.

Terrain variety

  • Open alpine bowls: Wide, open spaces for carving and enjoying powder turns.
  • Steep and challenging lines: Includes steep couloirs, glaciers, and long, sustained fall-line runs.
  • Gladed runs: Offers skiing through dense forests, including old-growth cedar glades.
  • Variety of options: Within a single day, skiers can experience different types of terrain, from trees to bowls to ridges.

Experience & atmosphere

  • Fewer crowds: The effort required to access the area means fewer crowds and a more exclusive feeling compared to other major ski destinations.
  • Remote and pristine environment: The mountains offer a sense of solitude and adventure in a vast, natural setting, attracting "true skiers" who are focused on powder and mountain experiences.

As we enter our 23rd season we can certainly attest to the accolades above. We hope you too will get the chance to ride here in our special spot.
