What's New at Selkirk Powder Co.

Selkirk Powder Company (SPC) is stoked to be starting its second operating in Atlasta–Casey with new multi-day backcountry ski tours and has released its annual avalanche course schedule.

  • New Location and Terrain: SPC moved its base of operations from Schweitzer to a new area a few miles south of Priest Lake. This new zone covers 6,250 acres of state-owned land, which is significantly larger than their previous area and is described as steeper and at a higher altitude, with peaks reaching 6,700 feet and up to 2,025 vertical feet of runs.

  • Focus on Backcountry: The company is focusing on developing this new terrain, which features open alpine bowls, steep lines, and gladed runs through old-growth cedar.

  • Operational Transition: The company is currently working on establishing a new, efficient snowcat road system in the Atlasta–Casey area, so the snowcat pace might be slightly slower compared to previous seasons as they build out the infrastructure.

  • Guided Experiences: Selkirk Powder continues into it's 23rd year operating as a licensed outfitter, offering guided snowcat, snowmobile, and backcountry skiing/splitboarding tours across a vast area of the Selkirk Mountains.

Selkirk Powder Co offers AIARE courses with experienced, qualified instructors and has released its 2026 schedule.

  • AIARE Avalanche Rescue Course: This course focuses on companion rescue skills

    • Dates: January 3, 2026

  • AIARE 1 Course: This three-day course provides an introduction to decision-making and risk management in avalanche terrain.

    • Dates: January 17–18, 2026

  • AIARE 2 Course: for those with prior AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue training, plus at least a year of backcountry experience. It focuses on advancing skills for leading small groups, making decisions in more complex terrain, and creating travel plans. The curriculum deepens understanding of avalanche formation and hazards through snowpack analysis, leading to better forecasting and risk management skills

    • Dates: February 13-15, 2026
